Wellness & Nutrition Post Pregnancy

Hi Everyone,

Little Darcey Rose has reached the ripe old age of 7 months , she really has been a dream baby, a little bundle of love x

Ben & Bayley suffered with colic and reflux and didn’t really sleep and cried a lot …….so I have definitely experienced both sides

Needless to say the last few months have been crazy with the summer holidays … and I was exhausted… there is so much going on post baby, I have always been very active / running gym & yoga but bar yoga classes haven’t done much exercise. All the things I avoided when pregnant were the very things keeping me going – or so I thought … coffee sugar etc. . . . The short boost I was getting  from coffee really wasn't  worth the crash and by 3 o clock I was ready to fall asleep.

I don’t believe in dieting post pregnancy, drastic changes in diet are not recommended especially if you are breast feeding, be good to yourself eat well and enjoy those precious months with your new baby. There is not a diet I haven’t tried , I’ve done  everything- weightwatchers –atkins-durkan – you name it I’ve tried it and they really don’t work , you get short term results but that rarely lasts. One thing I do like is detoxing short term cleanses like juicing / alkaline cleanse. (6 months post-partum)

What I really wanted to work on was my energy levels as I wasn’t functioning, so I decided to visit a nutritionist and have my blood work done with my GP. Thankfully the results with the GP came back normal so then I knew it was dietary  related. I think a blood test is a good idea as the body goes through such huge changes in pregnancy. I have been working with Alex Dobbs @ Grassroots Nutrition; she recommended a food intolerance test, which showed up intolerance to wheat, gluten & dairy. So my diet of toast and coffee was out …..

I have been on the plan now for 4 weeks and slowly my energy is starting to return I am back in the gym and able to work out again which I love. The plan I am following is mainly alkaline based foods lots of juices – soups – salads. Ironically the way I eat when I am pregnant!! , no wonder you feel so good...

Key points post pregnancy

Don’t make any drastic dietary changes especially if you are breastfeeding.

Don’t turn to coffee / sugar the short burst you get is not worth the crash and they are adding extra acidity into your system.

Your post pregnancy  hormones could be causing mood swings eat mood boosting alkaline foods like leafy greens ,avocados, chia / flax seeds ( I recommend  honestly healthy by Natasha Corrett her new book, honestly healthy in a hurry is fantastic , and of course the happy pear books).

Drink loads of water, at least 2 litres a day jazz it up with some lemons and limes and fresh mint leaves start every morning with hot water with lemon & cider vinegar (Braggs live vinegar).

Embrace exercise, even a simple walk with baby, fuel your body with healthy nutritious s foods, ditch the junk food from your kitchen, fill up with fresh food and have healthy snacks ready.

Most importantly be good to yourself, take time for you, spend time on your own, sometimes you have to put everything aside and just take care of yourself to allow yourself to take care of others.

Love Suzie x
